How safe is your Uber ride? This is a question that the company has followed for years, as it has faced complaints from passengers and drivers claimed they were sexually attacked in an Uber.

Now About the extent of these complaints revealed for the first time.

The company received 5,981 allegations of serious sexual assault in the United States over two years, according to a new report for 2017 and 2018. The claims range from unwanted touching and kissing to rape.

trips to The US only, the report also includes the deaths associated with Uber. During these two years, 107 people have died in accidents with Uber-have been killed by cars and 19 people, in the physical assaults, during or soon after a trip with Uber.

As troubling as these statistics are the incidents that they cover, are rare. The people in the USA took 2.3 billion rides with Uber in the two years. For 99.9% of these trips, no security was reported in the incident, and the serious security problems in Detail in the report were unusual.

“On the scale, Uber operates, we will see, both the good and the bad that happens in society, because we are in operation, so many trips every single day,” said Tony West, Uber’s chief legal officer.

“the unfortunate but sad truths is that sexual assault, sexual violence is far more prevalent in American society than a lot of people,” he said. “In the company, it exists in the class rooms, there are at the universities and houses. Uber is not immune to this.”

data paint a mixed and limited image

The report is a window into a long-standing problem for ride-hailing companies — not just Uber, but competitors around the world, including Lyft in the United States, the Didi in China, and Ola in India. The apps come under intense scrutiny in how they treat the on-screen driver, complaints and remove the perpetrators from their platforms.

But, the report does not present a complete picture. When it includes sexual assaults, Uber, what you defineds the five most serious categories: nonconsensual non-sexual part of the body kissing, attempted nonconsensual sexual penetration, nonconsensual touching of a sexual body, nonconsensual kissing of sexual body parts, and nonconsensual sexual penetration.

The report does not include other types of sexual misconduct, such as masturbation, questions for sex, or verbal threats of assault. Uber worked with the National Sexual Violence Resource Center and other stakeholders to develop groups that the report and address safety issues.

The report ranks car accidents and physical assaults to death, but not those that led to injuries, which is probably far larger numbers. The company says it will give updated data every two years.

The rate of severe sexual assault incidents per trip went down in each category, the between 2017 and 2018. For example, the average rate of sexual assault reports about the five categories fell by 16% from one year to the next.

“I feel good, the Uber is a very safe means of transport. And I think that shows the data in this report, actually, that, too,” West said.

be warned But Uber also to the fact that the prices could be attacks in the coming years, when more people are encouraged to report sexual. Reporting rates for sexual violence and misconduct are notoriously low.

numbers of sexual assault in the Uber-report cover a wide range of allegations. Some of the claims was investigated by the police and prosecuted. In other cases, on the person who reported it was not able to reach, the attack for more information.

The victims, both riders and drivers. In fact, the passengers were accused of sexual violence in nearly half of the reports.

do not break Under the 19 cases of death due to assault, Uber, the the attacks. Eight of the victims were drivers, seven were Uber-driver, and four were third parties, e.g. to persons outside the car.

Uber is of the opinion that a serious assault in connection with Uber, if at least one person with the app — either in the rider or driver, or, if there are people involved, coupled by the Uber app and found within 48 hours of travel.

Uber Is more or less secure than a taxi?

A question that is not answered in the report, how About the safety record in comparison to other forms of transportation.

There are no national statistics on how many sexual assaults or deaths happen in the US taxis every year.

Taxis are not regulated in the rule, the track of each of the cities, and most of the police departments, whether sexual assault include a particular company or type of work, said John Boit, executive vice president of Transports station Alliance, a trade group that represents taxi and limousine companies.

The data that are available are difficult to compare directly with Uber report. San Francisco Transport regulator-tracks complaints about taxis, mainly through the city’s 311 hotline. In the year 2017, for example, San Francisco 14 reports of violence or physical clashes and four reports of accidents with injuries received lead.

But the city is not separate sexual assault complaints. And without knowing the total number of trips taken in San Francisco in taxis, in this year, it is impossible to calculate how often such events occur.

As for the 107 people killed in accidents involving an Uber vehicle in the two years covered by the report, compares with 74,033 people total killed in accidents on American roads in this period, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

About the dangers of the death rate per mile was about half the national rate, according to the NHTSA, each year, the report said.

balancing security and privacy

In the past two years, Uber has introduced a number of safety features, including a “panic button” in your app, connects to emergency services the driver and passengers to identify, with the help of sensors in the driver’s smartphones, possible crashes, and implementing continual background checks of the drivers.

It is considering additional security measures, including the recording of trips with audio or video, and sharing with other ride-hailing companies, the names of drivers, the banned from its app for serious violations of the safety precautions.

the latest proposals, the questions, what is on a balance between the safety of the passengers and drivers about their rights to privacy.

Sharing the names of banned drivers could help prevent a driver is prohibited, groping, to drive, for example, simply switching to the rival Lyft.

“We are anxious to do, in a way that the said fair, and compliant with the law,” West. “But we think it is important that if someone shared as safe on our platform, this information with others.”

The company already shares this information in Chicago, where local laws ride-hailing apps to inform officials of the city, if you ban a driver for reasons, including complaints of sexual misconduct, and physical assaults. The city then passes these names on other ride-hailing companies.

The flag could be driver behavior is not safe or inappropriate, even if their behavior violates the law. The allegations cannot be confirmed, the way you would in a criminal case, and it is unclear how much information would require a company to prohibit a driver for behavior, while using another app.

Uber is testing the audio-recording in some cities in Latin America-and video-recording in Texas. It allows either the driver or passenger to initiate recordings. You can choose to send the file to but not or save it for yourself./to require p>

have pushed Many critics, for About cameras in cars.

“a dashboard-camera for these trips would prevent, I think, that a substantial part of the assault happened,” said Rachel Abrams, an attorney who represents San Francisco, the law firm the victim of the sexual attack on ride-hailing apps.

But the roll-out of such recordings more generally, the Navigation privacy and notification requires laws differ in States and countries.

Uber is the first journey to release hailing companies, the security of the data. Lyft has also said he is working on a report.

In the meantime, victims of sexual assault are, your claims against Uber and Lyft in court. This week 20 people filed a new lawsuit against Lyft in San Francisco, accused the company that you will be in danger.
