rest assured, we have the leg work done to determine if a VPN service has a history of good or bad behavior. Updated 3/16/20: We have recently our review of the latest version of NordVPN, which continues to be a stellar choice added, with good speed and attractive features. See the links to all of our VPN reviews at the end of this article.

Best VPN overall

It is the best overall VPN is difficult to choose. Slightly weaker privacy, but can use much easier while others are a interface redesign.

Still, the meaning of a VPN to stay private and have your internet activity kept as private as possible. For this reason, we see the choice Mullvad as the best overall VPN (our review of Mullvad). The company recently published a revised desktop client and the VPN does a good job in the privacy. Mullvad not ask for your E-Mail address, and you may want to E-mail your payment in cash, if you. Like many other VPN Mullvad did not capture a no-logging policy, and even the identification of meta-data from their use.

Mullvad is also fast though not the fastest VPN we’ve tested. In the last year, we said, if Mullvad has a user-friendly interface it would be almost unbeatable and this is definitely the state of things in this letter.

If you like Mullvad focus on the privacy, but want a service with more features, take a look at OVPN. This service provides solid speeds, and it has excellent methods for the protection of the privacy of the users. On top of that, OVPN officially supported Netflix streaming for the USA, Germany, and Sweden, and every year subscribers to its multi-hop feature for free. It is expensive, and the list of countries is smaller than many services, but its approach to privacy is a very interesting and hard to beat. (See our review of the OVPN).

Best VPN for US Netflix

If you live outside of the U.S. (or a U.S. resident and traveling abroad), is a VPN the only way access Netflix, the US library. But since Netflix blocking VPNs began to make only a few services, the effort, the fight with the streaming giant.

luckily, there are some brave companies that are still trying to stay a step ahead of Netflix VPN-Catcher. Currently, wind scribe Pro is our top choice. The service provides good speed on its US servers, and has a very simple approach for Netflix: Just select the “Windflix” link from the desktop app or browser extension and you’re good to go. Windflix technically still in beta, but it works well and there is even a Windflix the UK option, if you want to experience Netflix from the other side of the pond.

of course, Netflix could block access at any time, but for now, wind scribe is a step ahead of the streaming giant RAID. (For more about wind scribe Pro, you can find our full review.)

Fastest VPN

HotSpot Shield has some of the best speeds we have not seen yet, and it’s not even close. In our tests, HotSpot Shield, some 35 percent dipped below the rated speed. This is essential to see less of an impact than you will with most VPN services—if your
experiences may vary.

On the downside, HotSpot Shield does not for a way to pay anonymously and privacy can not sit well with some.

Still, HotSpot Shield has excellent speeds, it’s desktop application is very nice, and as a bonus, it works with US Netflix (read our full review).

Best VPN for US-speeds

IVPN has, by far, the best speeds we have seen on the US (and UK)  connections. Your individual results may vary, but with a free, three-day trial, who should be on the lookout for good speed from the US or UK –  IVPN a try. IVPN is Windows program is very easy to understand and to manage; however, it is an expensive service to $100. per year
and there is no guarantee that it will work with Netflix. (Read our full review.)

Best VPN for torrents

Torrents have a bad reputation, and if we are honest, is with good reason. With torrents, the number one way is to download pirated material, including movies, TV shows, music and games. But that’s not all there is to torrenting. It is a very efficient way to download legal software such as Linux distributions and authorized content from Websites such as BitTorrent Now.

to use If you’re going to torrents, but life is easier when you use a VPN, especially if the network you are on blocks torrenting. There are many VPNs among our top picks for the download of the torrents, but our preferred choice is the Private access to the Internet. This no-frills VPN has an absolute ton of servers, good speed and a nice amount of country locations remain relatively anonymous. (Read our full review.) The price is right at less than $40 per year, and the privacy policy tested in court. Plus, advanced users can customize your level of encryption for the encryption of data, authentication of data, and handshake.

What is a VPN?

VPNs create a secure tunnel between your PC and the internet. You are connecting to a VPN server in the USA or another country—say, France or Japan. Your web traffic then goes through to make the server for it to appear as if it is just that the server site, and not from your actual location.

If you are using a VPN, it is difficult for others to snoop on your web browsing activities. Only you, the VPN service, and the website you visit, what you ‘ re up to.

A VPN can spoof a good response to a variety of concerns, such as online privacy, anonymity, security on public Wi-Fi, and, of course, locations.

While a VPN can help, privacy and anonymity, I would recommend not stoking the next big political revolution, and the only a VPN. Some security experts argue that there is a commercial VPN is better than a free proxy such as the TOR network for political activity, but a VPN is only part of the solution. To connect to an internet phantom (or as close to how you can realistically a still-to-be), there is a lot more than $7 monthly subscription to a VPN.

If you want a VPN-for political reasons, this article cannot help you. But there are other places that you can apply to online such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Moving on to less serious topics, is a VPN secure is an excellent choice for a stay while using Wi-Fi at the airport or your local coffee shop. Hackers sit on public Wi-Fi can try to hack your PC, but a VPN, that the task is much more difficult.

Finally, you may want a VPN to fake your location, to download content, you should have no access to but even this has limits. A VPN is used to observe the go-to solution US Netflix overseas. This changed in the year 2016 when Netflix opened almost every country in the world. Since then, the company has invested a lot in the detection and blocking of VPN users. Even people who are blocked on a VPN in your own country by you has been detected Netflix, whether.

There are VPNs that can fool Netflix, but they are rare, and there are no guarantees that outwit these services, Netflix, for always.

About Netflix, a VPN can help to download an Android app, the only bound on a foreign version of Google Play or stream content from region-restricted services such as the UK-BBC iPlayer and Pandora.

One last note of caution: to protect not rely on your VPN banking information on a open Wi-Fi connection. Whenever possible, allow online financial transactions, for the home via a hard-wired connection.

What you are looking for in a VPN

to understand Before anything else, that if you want to use a VPN you should pay. Free VPNs data in aggregate form for researchers and Marketing experts are to either sell your browsing, or give you a puny amount of data transfer per month. So or so, a rule of thumb is that a free VPN is not, you protect your privacy in any meaningful way.

to test The next thing, is a VPN-logging policies. In other words, what kind of data a service that will collect about you and your VPN activity, and how long data will be stored is?

“privacy” is the fundamental principle of the VPN, and what is to be avoided as it has, the passive state of monitoring only a VPN provider are collecting all of your website visits?

Ideally, a VPN is to say, it only keeps track of the logs for the shortest periods of time. Some providers, for example, only log activity in RAM during a session, or automatically send all of the records forgotten, as soon as they are created. Other providers keep the records for a few hours, days, weeks, or even months.

a VPN will vary guidelines when it comes to personal information. Some VPNs are want, know very little about you, dear users log in with a pseudonym and pay with Bitcoin. This is a little exotic for most people, which is why many of the services also accepts PayPal.

the payment this way is not ideal for privacy, but it means that the VPN does not have your payment information on record—but it would be by PayPal available.

After the logging policy, you want to know how many servers the VPN provides, and how many connections it has. The number of servers provides an idea of how much load a VPN before you slow down to a snail’s pace due to the overwhelming traffic.

The country-connections that, in the meantime, important for those who pretending to be their location; but not so-called “Spoofer” should also ensure that there are connections in your home. If you live in Los Angeles, for example, and want access to American content, then you need a VPN that offers US connections. It will not work, try it and see Amazon Prime Video via a Dutch VPN connection, because Amazon’s your computer in the Netherlands.

Some users may wish to research a VPN provider the peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing directives. There are VPNs, block torrents. Other an eye, but to sell to push you in a heartbeat, you should not be up to no good. P2P is not our focus, but we will consider them in any assessment of whether a certain provider to enable file sharing or not.

Eventually support as many devices a VPN support from a single account? In the age of smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs, a VPN the cost of licensing for a minimum of five devices should include. Also, the provider of Android and iOS should apps make it easy to connect a smartphone or tablet to the service.

How we tested

We evaluate VPNs, on a variety of criteria, including General connection speeds, privacy protection, user-friendliness of the interface, country, decisions, server number, and cost.
