Qualcomm’s next-gen-Snapdragon-865 mobile chip sets to 5G

Qualcomm’s next-gen-Snapdragon-865 mobile chip is focused on 5G

Qualcomm, uncorked this year’s version of its Snapdragon technology summit with the announcement of the names of its two new Snapdragon chips, the Snapdragon 865 and the Snapdragon-765/765G. Not surprisingly, the focus this year is on 5G, and the “KI” that these chips apply to software enhancements.

Because this is the Snapdragon technology summit, we expect to hear more details on each of these chips in the coming days. For now, however, Qualcomm just tease the name and basic skills.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips are in some of the most common processors in smartphones and a mainstay in high-end flagships, the power supply of the Samsung Galaxy S10 and OnePlus 7 Pro among other things. Both phones have Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 take Snapdragon summit was introduced last year, and the new chips is fair to say, we would expect to use the eventual successor to these phones, as well.

Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile at Qualcomm Technologies, introduced the both of them said the Snapdragon 865 and the Snapdragon-765/765G, but there is nothing about an expanded “Plus” version, such as Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 855 Plus half way through the year.

Specifically, Katzouian said to be built, the Snapdragon 865, the Snapdragon-X55, Qualcomm, the second-Generation 5G modem, started the company in February of this year. The X55 was part of the “project limitless” PC platform Qualcomm showed off with Lenovo at Computex, but is not expected to have much more of a factor in smartphones.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 765, next to a penny.

While the Snapdragon 865, obviously, is the premium smartphone platform, is aimed at the flagship phones, remember that Qualcomm also announced what he called the “Elite Gaming platform” as part of the 855, with slightly tweaked features in its Adreno GPU. Later the Snapdragon 730 and 730G, the presented launched a faster Adreno-618 GPU-optimized for mobile gaming. Qualcomm seems ready to move, some of which is in the Qualcomm Snapdragon-765 and 765G, the “built-in 5G connectivity, advanced AI processing, and select Snapdragon-Elite-Gaming experiences,” Qualcomm Katzouian said.

We will not know the features of the platform until later this week, but we can certainly follow the direction that Qualcomm shows.

A question of how Qualcomm 5G treated. Last year, Qualcomm, the X50 modem launched as part of the Snapdragon-855-platform, but the modem was a discrete component of the longer-term sub-6GHz bands, as well as the short-range, high-bandwidth “millimeter-wave” technology.

Qualcomm also sees AI-unlike, for example, Intel. In the smartphone space, “AI” is first and foremost to improve smartphone photography and video, allowing for computational photography that is beyond the physical limits of the lens. But the Snapdragon 855 the Hexagon integrated 690 DSP that has been converted for the AI. This logic operated functions such as the always-listening “wake words”, such as “OK, Google.”

As of the Spectra 850 ISP built into the Snapdragon 855 portrait mode for video is added, in addition to just still images. That spectra were also recorded from 22 mega pixels at 30 frames per secondond with simultaneous dual-cameras; or 48MP at 30fps with a single camera. The 855-4K-HDR10+ video capture in the portrait is added to mode at 60 fps.

Look for the Snapdragon-865 to even more possibilities.

note: Because Qualcomm would have to provide certain information only via an in-person briefing in Hawaii, with no alternative venue in the continental United States or by virtual means, we took to pay the company’s offer for the flight and the hotel in order to get the story.
