remote controls the most underrated aspect of the streaming-media-Player.

While other functions, such as software -, speed-and video-format support is a matter more like the remote control is what you ultimately interact with the most. Like the bun on a hamburger, it or break the entire experience.

Even so, the media-streaming device makers like Roku, Amazon, and Apple have little agreement on what should be the ideal remote. Detached from the conventions of cable TV, streaming, remote controls are a blank slate, that decision-makers have built a device, with varying degrees of success.

after testing pretty much every major streaming device that’s come out in the last few years I have some opinions about this topic. Consider this a connoisseur’s guide to the media streaming, remote landscape, ranked from worst to best:

10. Chromecast

The only what’s worse than a bad remote control, no remote. In fairness, the Chromecast great idea is to start with the Smartphone or tablet, the videos on the TV is pretty neat, but it is better as a Supplement than as the main method to control your TV, especially since you still need to reach for a real remote control your TV volume and power.

9. Fire TV Basic Edition

In the United States, Amazon has buttons the expiry of the first-generation Fire TV Stick remote in favor of a with Alexa-controls and dedicated TV volume and power. In some international markets, not so much luck. This basic remote control has cheap plastic buttons, a directional pad, which is flat, and it offers no way to control your TV’s volume or power. Chromecast aside, it is the worst of the worst.

8. Roku Express and Premiere

In his zeal to hit lower price points as Amazon, the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick, 4K, Roku from the grave mistake of cheaping out on the remote control. In contrast to other Roku Player, remote controls for the $30 Express and $40 Premiere no buttons for TV volume or power, nor are they the voice control, and the use of IR means that you do not pick up sometimes each key press. This is comparable with hand-grinding a beef patty of the pork ribs and brisket with a perfect 80/20 meat-to-fat ratio, just stick it between two slices of white bread.

7. Xiaomi Mi Box S

From the distance, the Xiaomi Mi Box’s remote looks good. But if you pick it up, the plastic housing feels light and cheap, and the center-positioning of the Android button leads to many mistaken presses. The remote does not contain an infrared emitter, so that the volume buttons can not direct the TV output, and the “Live control” button is given of dubious usefulness, the sad state of the Android-TV-Live-TV-app. Xiaomi called, the on this remote, much as on the Mi-Box S self.

6. AirTV Mini

In the talk to the readers, I know, a desire exists for streaming remotes that resemble more what had the people with cable. This means that including the dedicated instructions and the recall keys that work with live-TV-streaming-services. The AirTV Mini remote provides exactly that, with the proviso that its functions only work with Sling TV. Also confusing: the remote control has separate voice control buttons for Google Assistant, and the Sling app. Although it is not the best remote in total, there are wondering what could reach Google, if you built an Android TV device with YouTube TV as a focal point.

5. Apple TV and Apple TV 4K

You either love it or hate it, the Apple TV ‘ s trackpad-based remote control, so that, even though I fall into the former camp, I am obliged to use it in a neutral point on this list. – Swipe with the thumb is not ideal for precise input, but it is fantastic for whizzing through the menus, and it is still the only remote control that you can, fill in password fields-by-voice. Lens, although the Apple TV remote has one major flaw: Its ultra-slim design allows it to slip between the sofa cushions on the regular.

4. Roku Express+ and Streaming Stick+

For a mere $10 more than the Roku Express, or Roku Premiere, you get a much better remote control, either with a 1080p-streaming-player ($40 Express+) or a 4K player (the $50 Streaming Stick+). Both have TV volume, power and mute controls, and you use a RF to communicate a signal without line-of-sight to the streaming player.

none of this is a note of remarkable, in 2019, but Roku also gets the small things right, how comfortable rubberized buttons and an easy-to-design thanks to the different sized buttons in each row.

(Roku ‘ s Streaming Stick+ headphones-output at Best Buy is almost the same, but a headphone Jack for private listening. We consider it the number 3.5 on the list.)

3. Nvidia Shield-TV (2019)

Nvidia’s new shield TV remote is so close to streaming-TV-perfection. It is the only remote control that is on this list with the buttons with backlight and programmable key assign you can do all kinds of functions (including a gag for the new shield is impressive, AI-scaling-function). The remote control even has a great weight that helps to strengthen the shield 150 price tag.

Still, it is just a little too slim for its own good, the columns, in an unusual two-for-layout that stacks playback buttons vertically and leaves no room for a proper mute button. (Instead, you need to the assignment of the programmable key, or the master of the volume-up and-down buttons at the same time.) In every other way, the shield-TV tried to make a no-compromises streamer, so it’s a shame the remote is not quite able to keep up.

2. Amazon Fire TV stick and fire TV-the Cube

The Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Stick, 4K, and fire-TV-Cube-remotes are a rare balance of form and function. There are no garish colours or sponsored app shortcuts here, just a common-sense layout, with rubberized buttons on a slim but not too slim plastic case. Amazon knows that its Alexa voice button on the control pad, away from other buttons, so that you are not on it by accident, and the home button has a helpful little tab, so that you can be confused with the row of playback buttons below. The design can be on the sterile side, but it is certainly elegant.

1. Roku Ultra

This is the Cadillac Escalade of remote controls is with the TV volume, mute, and power buttons, a headphone Jack for undisturbed music enjoyment, the two buttons that you can program to launch any app, and a quick replay button that jumps back several seconds (and may temporarily the subtitles) to activate. The Roku Ultra even has a remote finder button, the chime plays on the remote control to help you track it down. That is to say, the Roku Ultra remote is so hearty that it hardly imagine it ever lost. Sure, Roku sponsored buttons on the bottom are sticky, but in all my years of using them, I don’t remember ever meeting an accident.

the best feature is the inch-long groove, which should be along the upper part of the remote control on the bottom, right where your index finger is. You don’t know exactly, press and hold the Roku Ultra remote. They embrace you, like a soft and comforting potato roll with a cooked burger.
