iPhone-SE (2020) review: Everything you need (and nothing else)

iPhone-SE (2020) review: Everything you need (and nothing else)

to check out The new iPhone-SE is difficult, because it contains to test a lot of interesting new technology and to explain, but because it is the opposite of the case.

Literally anything here is the new one. You could write a pretty comprehensive and accurate assessment in a single short sentence: Apple took the iPhone 8, there was the iPhone 11 processor, and the charge is only $399 for it.

And yet, the last part, the favorable the price, that’s what makes it so interesting. For many millions of potential customers, a brand-new iPhone has remained out of reach. For so many others, your year-old iPhone is overdue for an upgrade, but the new iPhones will give you sticker shock.

This phone has even who nothing a iPhone, released in the last couple of years, but for its target audience of iPhone 6 upgraders and “I got this basically for free, my career” – customers, the new iPhone-SE is the most important value, because, well, the old iPhone-SE.

iPhone 8 redux

At a glance, it is hard to say, the iPhone of a iPhone 8. You have to work exactly of the same size with exactly the same arrangement of the buttons—iPhone 8 cases, well-to-iPhone-SE. There are small changes in the way the iPhone-SE in the front everything is black, no matter the back made of glass, the color, or the centered now-the Apple logo on the back. Essentially, though, this is a iPhone 8 is on the outside.

Physically, the iPhone-SE (center) is almost identical to the iPhone 8 (left), and much smaller than the iPhone 11 (on the right).

It is exactly like the iPhone 8 in most of the other species. Both IP67 water-resistance. Both support wireless charging. The new phone has HD has the same 4.7-inch Retina (approximately 720p) LCD display, also.

The iPhone-SE supports wireless charging, like the iPhone 8. But if you are from an older iPhone, it is new to you.

you don’t really notice that the resolution is a bit limited which, by today’s standards, but they are, it is not quite as bright as the newer models. We do not measure a maximum brightness of 750 nits, which is not bad for a $400 phone, but the iPhone 11 from a cranked 900 nits. In the bright light of day, it makes a big difference.

If you enjoy a fan of small phones, it, the relatively small size and light weight of the iPhone-SE. Every iPhone since the iPhone 8 was larger, and the rest of the smartphone industry has followed the same trend. Three years ago, when it was new, we did not think that the iPhone 8 as particularly small, but it is one of the smaller cell phones today.

I hope you do not such as Touch-ID, because at these prices, you can get them, Face ID.

And, of course, the iPhone 8 was the last iPhone (until now), the Home button and Touch ID instead of an edge-to-edge display and Face ID. In the last couple of years of iOS development have focused on the gesture control for Home button-free iPhones, and it feels really strange to go back to using

If each iPhone, have you ever had possessed, a Home button, they feel right, good,  home with the iPhone-SE. It is understandable that Apple would mean the renunciation of the expensive true depth of a module and the edge-hugging screen on a mobile phone, costs only $399, but it still feels like a step.

is Unnecessarily high performance

The biggest difference between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone-SE of the processor. The A13 Bionic in the iPhone SE is dramatically faster than the A11 in the iPhone 8.

Benchmarks for the iPhone-SE show that it is to perform essentially the same as the iPhone 11. Single-threaded and multithreaded CPU performance are both in about 30 to 40 percent faster than the iPhone 8 in the majority of benchmarks. Our Geekbench 4 and 5 test results only show what we expect: the iPhone-SE performs exactly on par with the iPhone 11, a phone that costs hundreds more. It is faster than almost all Android phones, the in these tests, regardless of price.

In Geekbench 4, the iPhone-SE, with the iPhone 11, as expected. It seriously surpasses the iPhone 8.

The newer Geekbench 5 benchmark shows the same story. You get the performance of the best iPhone at half the price.

the graphics performance to make a big step. Depending on the application, it can be anywhere from 40 to 60 percent faster than the iPhone 8. Interestingly, while the older 3DMark-Ice-Storm-Unlimited-test delivered results that we expect (the same as the iPhone 11), the recent spin tests were a lot slower, but still faster than the iPhone 8. We are not sure what causes this discrepancy (hardware or software?), but we ran the tests several times to confirm it. No matter—with a display resolution of 1334×750, the GPU, the A13 is totally exaggerated. Any modern graphics running-intensive game or application beautiful.

for some reason we are not able to find the 3DMark Sling Shot tests will be slower than on the iPhone SE iPhone 11.

But also other graphic tests, including other 3DMark tests show equal performance between the iPhone and iPhone 11.

Machine learning is a whole lot faster. While the A11 Bionic in the iPhone 8, Apple introduced the first Neural engine, newer processors are much faster from Machine-Learning tasks. The A13 is accompanied by 3 GB of RAM of 2 GB, the iPhone 8, but down from 4GB on the iPhone, 11.

If you are going from an older phone such as an iPhone 6s or even the previous iPhone-SE, you to see a night and day difference in performance. Everything is fly. Let that sink in for a moment: Apple’s $400 phone is in most respects, faster than the fastest Android phone you can buy, at any price.

If there is a vulnerability in the iPhone-SE-hardware, is that it has the same battery capacity as the iPhone 8, and essentially the same battery life. Our Geekbench 4 run-down test (with the display at 200 nits) ran for 3 hours 37 minutes, only 20 minutes longer than the iPhone 8.

the battery life is barely better than the iPhone 8. Not bad for a $400 phone, but not nearly as big as the other new iPhones.

mind you, this is with an intensive benchmark in a continuous loop, and your current day-to-day life of the battery much longer. I had no trouble getting through a full day of regular use. On the one hand, it is impressive to see the same battery capacity only lasts as long as dramatically improved performance. On the other hand, the other iPhones, while more expensive, lasts much longer on a charge.

A good enough camera

The iPhone-SE has the same camera sensors as the iPhone 8—we think. Apple would not answer a direct question, to confirm that, although it is not identical specifications: the lonely have, the rear camera is 12 MP with a f1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization, the front is a 7MP sensor with a f2.2 aperture. The iFixit teardown seems to confirm that the iPhone 8 and the iPhone-SE camera modules are identical.

Apple prefer to focus on the “camera-system”, which is also the image-signal-processor and the neural engine of the A13 chip. It’s a valid point, because so much of smartphone-image-quality depends on the image processing to be

In good light, the iPhone-SE is capable of producing sharp, colorful, detail-rich images with optimal dynamic range, almost on par with the iPhone 11 Pro.

As a result of the bump from the A11 to A13, the iPhone-SE much higher image quality than the iPhone 8, despite the use of what we believe are the same sensors and lenses. It can pull the iPhone-XR-trick in the single-camera portrait mode on the rear camera, and for the first time ever on an iPhone, on the before camera. The iPhone X and later models, no Portrait mode selfies with the true depth of a module, that the powers that be Face-ID, but the iPhone-SE is the first to do it with only a single standard camera on the front.

The iPhone can do portrait mode with the front of the camera, and the results are quite good.

It should be noted that both the front and the back camera only in Portrait mode and Portrait-lighting in the camera app, if you recognize a human face. Portrait-mode photographs of your house animals, or inanimate objects are not available. But the phone is view the production of an estimated depth, which means that third-party camera would be apps conceivable, give you portrait effects such as about every topic.

Try a Portrait mode rotated to present without a human face, and you get the error message: No person is detected.

While the iPhone SE, has been processing the same powerful image as the newest iPhone 11, because it’s not the same sensors are used, the results are pretty good. Especially, it is not so good in low light. The night-mode and Deep-Fusion of the functions of the iPhone 11 are completely absent. In good light, the iPhone 11, and the iPhone-SE take strikingly similar photos. As the light is poor, the iPhone is 11, the superiority is clear.

If you want to, portrait-mode shots of your Pets, you need to rear more to pay for an iPhone with dual cameras.

you can fantastic video with the iPhone-SE, also—up to 4K at 60fps or 1080p at 240fps. The Details, dynamics and clarity of the video is far better than any other phone in this price class.

Another trick for the iPhone 11, you will not find in the SE: night mode. These recordings were made under identical conditions.

the best feature is the price

The new iPhone-SE is perhaps the least interesting of iPhone debut of the year. It is only the latest processor, stuffed into an old iPhone with 8, right? There is nothing to see new here, and that makes it boring to Apple enthusiasts, always hungry for the next insanely great thing.

But it because Apple is just used existing parts, that it is able to sell, such a quite decent new iPhone for only $399. You can pay to jump to $50 more to 64GB storage up to 128GB, this is a good value and recommended. Years from now, you will be glad you did. A 256-GB version is $549, which is worth the cost.

This is a brand-new iPhone that costs about half of what iPhone 11, or one-third of the top-end iPhone 11 Pro Max. It is cheap enough that many users will, by the payment something like $5 more per month on their carrier bill or get it “free” with the purchase of another phone and a two-year contract.

The value is off the charts. With the A13 motorway, in the inside, it is faster than Android phones that cost twice as much. Photo-and image quality is outstanding for this price class. You will receive software updates for years, where similarly priced Android phones will be happy, you get to a single major Android update.

This is clearly not Apple’s best iPhone, but it is the best choice for many millions of users. It is Apple’s least interesting of iPhone in years, and at the same time is, perhaps, the most important thing. It is difficult to overestimate how big the market is for those who just want a cheap new iPhone, the for the last four or five years, even if it’s not any new fancy feature. We can only hope that Apple will wait another four years to produce another new iPhone model SE.
