Half-Life: Alyx is a full-length VR-prequel comes out in 2020, and valve Index owners get it for free
Valve released its excellent Index, a virtual reality headset in may and at the time everyone expected a bomb game to go along with it. Rumors that it Helped Life topics have been eddy not self-Helped, then, necessarily, the long-awaited Life 3, but…something. The first Half-Life under the Motto “something” in over a decade.
earlier this week, Valve, the rumors, announcing (sort of) confirmed Half-Life: Alyx, and called it their “flagship VR-game.” And it is definitely that, with valve updating the old Half-Life site today shows for the first time in a decade, that Alyx is a “full-length” $60 game by the release for “all PC-based VR headset,” March 20, 2020—even though the Index-owner (either the headset or the cheaper Controller) will get it for free. To buy a little more incentive for Valve’s hardware instead of a Vive or Rift.
Oh, the valve also confirmed that it is definitely not Half-Life 3. More like Half-Life 1.5, actually, meaning Alyx finds Half between the events of the original Life and Half-Life 2. A pre-sequel to give me a notion of Borderlands. From the press release:
“between the events of Half-Life and half-Life 2, Alyx Vance and her father Eli to assemble secretly in the resistance against the brutal occupation of the earth by a mysterious alien race, known as The combination. As Alyx, the player, you
So, uh…pretty much exactly what you’d expect of a game between Half-Life and Half-Life 2. This began with Gordon Freeman waking up to find out from the rigid, to Combine, had the earth been conquered, but now I think we will get to see the famous Seven-hour-war, for ourselves. Stick around for the G-Man cameo, as well.
The hope, I guess—at least for those of us who care about VR is that Alyx is groundbreaking enough, the mass adoption of the platform. This is always, a factor that Helped to half-Life VR rumors, really. the Half-Life 2 is the game forced on Steam in order to millions of PCs, effectively driving us into the era of digital games downloads. People gnashed their teeth and complained, but Valve’s vision at the end won.
If Half-Life: Alyx will prove, in a similar convincing? I’m not sure. The potential is there, like a built-in-Half-for-VR Life could prove Half as revolutionary as half-Life 2‘s physics have made. And hey, the fact it works on the $399 Oculus’s Rift is just as good as the $1,000-an Index is a good place to start. The barrier to entry is not too high.
Still, it’s hard to know. We had a lot of VR-Shooter, many of them quite good. Can Valve do something significantly better? Or if not, has Helped the Life name to carry enough cachet, headset revenue on its own? I think we will find out in a few months.
