This story is part of the in The 2010s: A decade in review, a series on the meme, people, products, movies, and so much more that have influenced the 2010s.

In the last ten years, and apps (and by Association, phones) have become an essential part of our lives. Since the iOS App Store and Google Play, in 2008, launched with what seemed like mostly a novelty title, you have to millions of apps that help us communicate, meet new people, Listen to music, and kill pigs with birds. Sure, today we use our phones to make calls sometimes, but apps are so popular, there are now apps that tell you how much time you spend with apps on your mobile phone.

As part of CNET decade in review
here are our picks for the effect of the application of the 2010s. I crowdsourced this list-some of the apps that exist for it at all, as the decade began, a few indeed, of any CNET editor and then curated it from there. The result is in the list below in no particular order.

Note that in the case of very similar apps that I have combined the most popular in this category, rather than individual entries. And, sure, there are hundreds of effective and important apps that are not on this list. If you do not feel that we are your favorite apps, put it in the comments and I’ll be sure to mention how well.

Instagram

What is it? Instagram allows you to share photos and videos.
First Version: 2010
Why it’s on the list: Instagram changed the way we think about the photos and, for many of us, changed our eating habits (for a time, I could not start eating my dinner, to I be image captured perfectly). It is also an incredibly effective marketing tool has grown over the years and continues to be, as it now reaches 1 billion users per month. I think the reason why it is still popular because it can develop more, in a meaningful way. Add things like stories and Boomerang in the last few years has kept it feeling fresh, and the transfer of these functions is a great way to continue to expand your customer base. While celebrity to make factors more believe us, you real life be incredibly extravagant life in order to sell us products. and still many people behave completely irresponsible behavior, and to capture that “perfect pic,” Instagram is still one of the easiest and entertaining social platforms.

Twitter

What is it? A social media platform for posting text, photos, and videos.
First Version: 2010
say Why it would be on the list: thirteen years after his debut, no one that Twitter has communicated completely the way changed how the world. Of the Arab spring, where protesters via Twitter to not only coordinate, but also the voice to send their message to the world, to the leaders of the world, such as President Donald Trump, who can now immediately a message to all the connected person in the world, it is clear that communication will never be the same. Although Twitter has not proven itself, at the margins on hate speech, it is still one of the best and most informative social networks.

Facebook

What is it? is A social media and networking platform
First Version: 2010
Why it’s on the list: Like Twitter, Facebook debut older than ten years, but it is the premiere social media platform in the world, with nearly 2.5 billion active users. Let it be, you reconnect with old friends and family members around the world, and you were flooded with memes, cat videos, requests for Farmville and news, both real and not-so-much. After the brief boom-time of MySpace, Facebook, social media popularized with the mainstream. However, in the midst of its user’s privacy scandals and the influx of fake news, the platform has fallen under the toughest test since the election in 2016.

scale/Hummel/Grindr

What are they? Dating apps, popularized by its simple filtering mechanic.
First Version: 2012 (tinder), 2014 (Bumble), Grindr (2009)
Why it was on the list: Never before has the act of searching for someone, no matter your needs and desires, which have been so easy (in the case of tinder and Bumble, swipe right on a potential mate pic if you are interested in. If not, swipe to the left.) People use apps for everything from fast connections to casual dating in search of long-term relationships. Grindr, a dating app geared to the LGBTQ community, was the first to debut, but scale the depth of the dating changed scene. Suddenly, you could filter them to get their decisions almost immediately exactly what you have been looking for. LOL! If only humans were simple creatures! BWAHAHAHAA!!

Google Maps/Apple Maps

What are they? The two most popular map/navigation apps in the world.
First Version: 2007 (Google Maps), 2012 (Apple Maps)
Why they on the list: I know it, to be honest, don’t travel without one of these. I have a terrible sense of direction, I’m not going to until I was in my 30s, and I still don’t know most of the roads with names. Seriously, I’m terrible and need this. But I digress. These apps took Mapquest to its logical evolutionary conclusion. Now you can travel anywhere in the world, without knowing exactly where a place is. Just follow the instructions on how to play GTA or so, and see what looks like your goal from the outside. Although I improved personally prefer Google Maps, Apple Maps has been formidable, since its disastrous launch a couple of years.

Spotify

What is it? A streaming music service
First Version: 2011
Why it’s on the list: I remember when Spotify debuted in the year 2011. It seemed to come from nothing, and more to be changed (you will see this word a lot on this list, if you have not already done so), the ever-evolving music industry. It felt a lot like the original version of Napster, only legal, but also free. Also free for some, as some artists such as Taylor Swift have in the past, all pulled their music from the service. Swift finally return to the streaming giant.

In the Start, Spotify is a huge 50-million-song library, in the shadow of competition enjoyed at the time. Spotify finally led Apple create your own music service called Apple music in the year 2015, you now have access to over 50 million songs.

Slack

What is it? An instant messaging platform
First Version: 2013
Why it’s on the list: What makes Slack is different from billions of other im clients in the last 25 years? It is primarily the integration with other apps and it can start to feel like the core of everything you to your work. These days it’s a toss-up which I open first in the morning: Slack or E-Mail. Slack is like E-Mail, part 2.

But, it is not only useful for work. As a family, busy life, to communicate with families with Slack, this is weird, but also weirdly appealing to grow as my own family begins. But like any tool, it depends on how you use it-the debate on the question of whether Slack improves or impairs the productivity.

Could be Uber super app status?

Uber/Lyft

What are they? , a rideshare on your phone, your exact location and you pay automatically with your credit card.
First Version: 2011 (Uber), 2012 (Lyft)
Why, you remember to the list: I myself, four years ago, when my 16-visited year nice to me in San Francisco from Minneapolis. She had never heard of Uber, and the whole thing kind of creeped them out. Now, I don’t think you can imagine traveling in any other way. Of course, the comfort has its price. Both Super and Lyft great face, complaining about alleged sexual assaults by drivers who have tried the cities around the world to regulate, and the driver fought for better pay. And while all of these extra cars on the road choke the traffic in the cities, it is not to deny the effect these apps have on the way we travel.

Venmo

What is it? Allows you to create digital payments to other persons.
First Version: 2012
Why it’s on the list: a person who seldom leads cash, I could never just my share of the pay, if you are out to dinner with a group of friends. Why Venmo, and other applications as it is a gift from the heavens-with you I didn’t constantly feel like a bum. You have to pay for things for friends, like movie tickets, and now you don’t have to pay is no excuse not to, you right back before the movie starts! We are not deadbeats!

Angry Birds

What is it? A game where you launch birds at structures in an attempt to kill pigs
First Version: 2009
Why it’s on the list: In its early days, Angry Birds is so popular, I persuaded myself, I had to like it. In the end, when I played it I didn’t, but his impact on the expectations of how the popular mobile game could be, is unprecedented. Double movies and many versions of the game, and later, Angry Birds is still a very popular franchise and has continued to develop with the time, most recently with Angry Birds AR. Again, not my Cup of tea, but many still like to have a SIP.

Candy Crush Saga

What is it? A match-three puzzle game.
First Version: 2012
Why it’s on the list: , I knew that this is something special, when my wife, who is not a gamer, not only couldn’t put it down, but also spent money to play it. It took six years, until, finally, you move on to Two points. I have never played Candy Crush Saga and probably not — the pictures are just a little too Saccharin for me-but it is one of the most popular tile-matching games of all time. You can pick it up quickly, it is a satisfying game mechanics, and it is something that you could do while you listen to music, books (according to my wife). Despite their fall, the game has the General popularity showed no signs of slacking.

Pokémon Go

What is it? The first major AR-game in the Pokémon universe
First Version: 2016
Why it’s on the list: It was a phenom when it was released in the year 2016. I’ve tried playback from my house, but there was nothing to find in my small suburban neighborhood, so I quickly abandoned, as I was too self-conscious in the city. The game finally lost most of its player-base, but is still incredibly popular to have crossed 1 billion downloads earlier this year. His formula for success was simple: Combine an already successful franchise with a new technology with strong social ties. It worked quite well.

Vine

What is it? Video platform, which will allow videos up to six seconds long and share.
First Version: 2013
Why was discontinued, it is on the list: After an exciting start to the year 2012, Vine of its owner, Twitter, in 2016, in the midst of the growing competition, especially from Instagram. But during his life, the Vine popularized quickly to the short-form video app. It gave them the opportunity, six-second videos and immediately after them, which (at the time) one of the coolest things I have ever seen in a app. I dove to the right, experimenting with some strange techniques, the collection of other and try to develop storytelling skills. As with most things, I was ready to move on ready after a few months, but wine continues to be a hit, leading to the birth of his evolutionary Cousins, TikTok.

flappy-birds-family.png

Flappy Bird

What is it? is A super-difficult mobile game, which no longer exists in its original form.
First Version: 2013
Why it’s on the list: Remember, if this game was the most downloaded app in the app store? He held this place for about a month in 2014 before its developer suddenly she took him down. He said it was so addictive that he’s going to lose sleep over so many people addicted to it. It was crazy-difficult, and something I can stomach no more than a few minutes. And to sell his reputation, even after his removal the people tried (unsuccessfully) phones, the the game on Ebay for up to $100,000.

What are they? Two very popular chat platforms
First Version: 2011 (Facebook Messenger), WhatsApp (2009)
Why you do this to the list: both of you are Facebook products and essentially the same, but different. Facebook deprived Messenger from the Facebook app in 2011, and made it his own thing. It is incredibly popular, and to communicate the preferred way for many people, especially if you are on Facebook, but not on someone’s number or do you want to abandon a text.

WhatsApp is the lighter version, which uses lthe ess-data, and encrypted his messages ” end-to-end (user-to-user), which is safer as a Messenger solution for sending messages to a server before it is sent to the recipient. It is also incredibly popular, especially in Asian countries.

Angela Long/CNET

Netflix

What is: A video streaming app that focuses on the original content.
First Version: 2010
Why it’s on the list: Netflix is the leading video-streaming-app. With it, you get access to Netflix, the growing number of original movies and series, such as Strange things, and Narcos. The iOS and Android apps you can download most of the shows or movies on your phone. Despite the high and growing competition, Netflix the streaming app is still all others will be measured. At least for now.

Snapchat

What is it? is A social media and messaging app, with videos and messages disappear after a time.
First Version: 2011
Why it’s on this list:  Snapchat, started in 2011, but his popularity hit the stratosphere, between 2013 and 2015, according to the add video-sharing, Snapchat Stories, ephemeral text-messaging, and (especially) the rainbow-vomiting-function. It allows people to publish short videos that would expire and “gone forever” after a set time. I must admit, as a chronic old fuddy-duddy, I never saw the appeal of videos or texts written, which will disappear after a while, but that’s just me. I think I’m a hoarder at heart and I want everything that I do, and for access for always.

youtube-music-app-no-gfx0

YouTube

What is it? is A video-app that allows everyone to post videos and watch.
First Version: 2007
Why it’s on this list:  YouTube changed the way we consume media has, from the time of booking videos and smooth produced original clips of the ‘YouTubers.” It is no longer an excuse to not be a filmmaker if you have ever dreamed of, a (the conversation with them, even!).

I use it all the time, and with the YouTube monthly subscription service that removes ads and allows me to play videos in the background, I can see the lists YouTube audio in the background. For this reason alone, it deserves to be included here, and I’m surprised more video apps have not incorporated this feature. In recent years, however, as the number of videos, which have increased with disinformation and racism, the platform for criticism. Still, the number of users now well over 1 billion Euro and shows no signs of slowing down.

Google Numbers/Apple Numbers

What are they? Mobile payment apps, with which you can pay in a retail store or online only with your Smartphone, tablet or smartwatch.
First Version: 2015 (Google Numbers), 2014 (Apple Pay)
Why are you on this list: to pay for things, the back rail with your cell phone as a new concept for a few years, but now it is my preferred way of working. It seems like a small thing, but I’m always on the search, that Apple-Pay-logo. It’s just an additional level of convenience that I greatly appreciate.

Google Assistant/Siri/Alexa

What are they? The top-voice assistant on the market.
First Version: 2010 (Siri), 2016 (Google Assistant), 2014 (Alexa).
Why she was on this list: Siri the first voice assistant when it debuted in 2011, but other options that have followed, it ran. (Google wizard, in particular, smarter and more intuitive.) I use an Apple HomePod with Siri, and I’m always disappointed by the fact that Siri is not smart. I hope that changes soon. Have to say Hey, Siri “” for each command, only quickly becomes old.

It is important to remember that, as exciting as this technology develops, the simple fact is that her voice wizard, to absorb and as a result, Google, Apple and Amazon (with the Alexa) have now either have a stop to, people you listen to in the privacy of your own home or you can opt-out of this recording. It is still odd if it is.

Amazon

What is it? The app for the world’s largest online retailer.
a child without the help of the Amazon app, you’re Why it’s on this list: , When triggered, a God in my book. I have Amazon, since I bought my first DVD some time in 2000. The Matrix, or perhaps the X-Men? May Be Ninja Scroll? I’m not sure, but I haven’t stopped shopping there, and I probably won’t any time soon. Now, an app that makes it even easier and faster-so fast that I don’t even need to add a task on my to-do list. If I was juggling an uncooperative toddler with a 1-year-old, who is doing his best to jump to the head of a couch, the ability to take 15 seconds from start to immerse children, you the vitamins is huge-it makes my life so much easier.

Skype/Facetime/Zoom

What are they? real-time video-based mobile phones calls.
First Version: in 2009, (Skype), 2010 (Facetime)
Why are you on this list: This is that sci-fi video phone of the future, which is still better than what any sci-fi movie could have predicted it, obviously because none of them predicted that the rise of the smartphone. I don’t use it much, but the times when I need something special, like when I’m away from my children and want to see their faces. It’s not like you see on The Jetsons, but the fact that I can see my sons when I’m away on a business trip or even a co-worker a thousand miles away, is amazing.

Fortnite

What is it? The game that took your child/nephew/cousin ‘ s
life-First Version: 2017
Why the games on this list: Fortnite, the type of cultural impact, few, if any, will ever achieve. From all over the Fortnite dance debacle of the fact that the winner of the year was awarded to 2019 Fortnite world Cup $3 million, Fortnite, is a huge, unstoppable pop-culture Juggernaut that shows no signs of slowing down.

as long as the developers keep the game fresh by letting them to do things, how to finish it, its popularity should continue for some time.

Uber Eats/Postmates/Grubhub/DoorDash

What are they? , food for delivery, even if the restaurant does not provide in the question itself.
First Version: 2015 (Over Eating), 2011 (Postmates), 2009 (Grubhub), 2013 (DoorDash)
Why you remember on the list: I remember the frustration of food from one of my favorite restaurants and see their “No delivery” sign. This now feels like a thing of the past. Sure, the food all of the time not cheap, or always healthy, but I would like to have the option. If I want a barbecue lunch, but I don’t have 20 minutes to get it, it is comforting to know that there are people that do nothing for me… for a price.

Google photos

What is it? A photo-storage app for Android and iOS.
First Version: 2015
Why it’s on the list: I think your big question is why Google has photos to make the list and not the photos app and iCloud on iOS? Well, as good as the photos app on iOS-and it has been improved in the last time — the app is not compatible with Android. Google photos, though, works on Android and iOS. It is also more cloud storage than iCloud, and the search function is more robust and useful. You can search for a word to be found in the image, or by the pronoun-only in the event that you want to, your friend’s baby’s pictures, but can’t remember if you took them.
