What this means for Apple

Apple’s iOS weather app is a little behind the times, and is based on data from The weather Chanel. About a year ago, I suggests wrote in an editorial on the Dark sky, as a large company, to acquire for Apple, because it meets three objectives:

  1. It instantly gives you a much better weather app.

  2. the

  3. It is driving its push into machine learning and AI, with a team that a decade of hands-on experience with a very difficult AI problem.

  4. the

  5. It offers you to offer a new service on ” Dark Sky API with many existing customers.

All of this is still true, although it seems that Apple is not interested in Dark-Sky-weather-API in a new service sales opportunity. Rather, it seems that the intention is to sunset the API business by the end of next year, and for the removal of the Dark sky, the presence on competing platforms, so that Apple devices, the only place to Dark sky hyper local weather notifications.

It would not be surprising to see an updated version of Dark Sky as the default weather app in iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and watchOS 7.

Today, many other weather apps offer the same kind of direct, right-where-you-are notifications, but the majority of them Dark Sky API to retrieve data. You can switch to a competitor before the end of 2021, of these features.
