7 free GIMP scripts and plug-ins for filters, brushes, textures, and more
The free and open-source image editing program called GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a good alternative to the subscription-based or boxed-versions of the competition (including PhotoShop). Whether you are a beginner with GIMP, or a seasoned Pro, there’s a lot to love.
Some of GIMP’s biggest advantages are the plugins and scripts by numerous independent programmers. In a time, there was a huge collection called the GIMP Plugin Registry, but this resource is no longer available. Therefore, you need the Internet-search for GIMP plugins and scripts.
start you on the right path, we have chosen our favorite plugins and scripts for you to try, with a short description and a link to the resource location. First of all, we should explain to us, however, to find the complicated process of Installation of these treasures and where they are on the GIMP menus.
Note on How to install and use GIMP plug-ins
that plugins in GIMP are plug-ins and scripts. Scripts (script-Fu) have .scm extensions, while the Python-Fu-have scripts .py-extensions. The .scm extensions, the directory of the Gimp scripts-during the .py extensions you copied to the Gimp plugins directory.
The complicated part is determining where you copied your system files. The easiest way to find out is to access the edit > settings > folder > Plugins, or edit > settings > folder > script path information from the GIMP menus. Note there are two folders listed:
A. For the 2.10 scripts – C:UsersYour the “users” folder NameAppDataRoamingGIMP2.10Scripts
B. For 2.8 scripts – C:Program FilesGIMP 2Share2.0Scripts “

Once you know the location, you can Unzip the downloaded file(s). Copy (or Move) the scm files to the folder location specified in “A” above for GIMP 2.10, or “B” above for GIMP 2.8. Copy (or Move) the py-files to the folder location specified in “C” above for GIMP 2.10, or “D” above for GIMP 2.8. When you are done, start GIMP.
NOTE: plug-ins and scripts are platform-specific, so make sure that the files you want to download written for Windows (not Linux or Mac, unless you have Linux or Mac).
after the Download in the correct folder, the Plugins and scripts are called by different locations on the GIMP menus, how to create a New tab on the menu bar (e.g., script-Fu FX-Foundry, Video, etc.); or under the image, layer, or filters tab; or, sometimes, under several tabs. GIMP comes pre-installed with 71 own filter effects, so some of the duplicates can. Do not delete any of them until you have tried on your photos, because they are the same filter effect (with the same name)—achieved if the development of two different persons may have very different results. You can keep the one you like best, or keep both.
G’mic (GREYC’s Magic for Image Computing)
This amazing resource 521-filter effects in their own menus, the on the “Filter” tab. From the web site cursor linked at the top, to the bottom of the G’mic plug-in for GIMP. Select for GIMP 2.10: Windows: installer or .zip-archive.
If you want to, with some of these filters, before proceeding to the download of the plug-in, select this link for G’mic online-user version. Open a file (from your computer), click on the Select a Filter button, then select Filter from the menu list, and watch the magic unfold.
a Quick sketch of a plug-in to convert a picture into a sketch/illustration/drawings. Every photo editing program I have ever used, provides a “Sketch” filter. This is better than most. Download here: 210_sketch_quick sketch.scm . Note that it adds a tab to the GIMP menu named Script-Fu with art – > Quick sketch under this tab.

Access-Resynthesizer functions from Filter > improvement, Filter > Map, or Filter > Render, then select “effects” from the sub-menu.
a script to notice, with 155 filter-effects under its own main menu tab called ” FX-Foundry. Note that some of the additional scripts under the Filter > FX-Foundry, including Animation, Logo, and rendering). This collection has some of the filter effects that I’ve never seen or used before, such as Corrosion, painting, Bercovich, Lovo, Aquarel, Orton effect, and dozens more.
This is a unique collection of scripts/plugins, because in addition to the 77 Filter, it also offers 461 brushes, and 63 papers, the actual to the textures. It has its own menu with eight tabs: Presets, paper, brush, orientation, size, placement, color, and General appearance. The Orientation, size, color, and other options tabs to customize the Presets (filters), papers and brushes. Click on this link to download GIMPressionist.
This sub-menu shows a copy of the current image (upper left corner), with Update and Reset buttons at the bottom. Scroll through the effects, see what you can do, then click Reset to cancel. Nice feature. As FX-Foundry, the Preset filters, some special effects, which are new to me such as embroidery, Flower bed, Parquet, Wormcan, baseball stadium, and rice. I can’t wait to try them out.
These filters are located under the Filter > artistic > GIMPressionist. You will have to copy all three extracted folders in the GIMP > 2.10 > GIMPressionist folder (see “A” above).

a really fun plug-in/script, photos, converts them into cartoons. If you have the download all scripts/plugins, which is discussed in this article, five “cartoon” effects. Although similar, they each have a somewhat unique quality. Click on this link to download CarTOONize.
This filter is located under the script-Fu tab > effects > Cartoonize. Note that you can combine additional filters to enhance the cartoon effect.
A GIMP-2.10.10-scripts Bundle
There are 114 scripts in this bundle, a collection of the Internet released by a long time GIMP user, with the name of Paul Sherman. He does not claim to be a programmer, but he has continuously many of the older scripts updated to make them compatible with the new versions 2.10. In addition to the scripts, the downloads, gradients, patterns, and some of the images are.
The link above contains detailed instructions on the installation, a list of all the scripts, how and where the files are copied, the download links, and a project of the history. Because the scripts are all in the “scripts” folder and the presets will be in the Gimpressionist folder, the Bundle files are all mixed with other scripts, and specifications, filters and Filter > artistic > GIMPressionist. If you download this bundle, you will have duplicate files. You all try to keep, you want, and delete the rest.
scripts are marked in The Filter/effects with GIMP on the menus with a big “G.” The independent programmers and the plugins are marked with a symbol of the double-gears.
